Recruitment

Recruiting apprentices may seem overwhelming at first. The resources on this website will assist your appointed apprenticeship support person or team in launching a successful recruitment strategy.

What are the benefits?

  • Actively recruiting apprentices helps your staff reflect the diversity in your community

  • Apprenticeship is a cost-effective way to train employees/staff

  • The on-the-job training that occurs during apprenticeship facilitates greater peer mentorship and collaboration

Recruiting Existing Employees

Apprenticeship re-engages existing employees, refreshes their skillset with the latest college courses, and provides opportunities for upward mobility.

With this in mind, many school districts have found it advantageous to begin the first round of recruiting by inviting current classified employees to attend an informational meeting. There are brochures available to distribute to both new and existing employees to provide introductory information prior to the meeting.

Things to consider when recruiting existing employees to participate in apprenticeship:

  • The “Grow Your Own” philosophy starts with investing in the professional development of your employees. Apprenticeship is a way to engage paraprofessionals who are seeking affordable pathways to becoming teachers. You are not just recruiting apprentices, you may be recruiting future teachers!

  • The employee must meet the minimum qualifications and be employed in the occupation for which they are an apprentice.

  • The employee must be willing and able to commit to attending college courses on their own time at the 50% reduced apprenticeship tuition rate.

Recruiting New Employees

New and potential employees may not have experience in the classroom. Apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity to better prepare them for the district’s expectations and culture.

An easy way to begin recruiting new and potential employees is to include the new employee brochure that outlines apprenticeship as part of your new employee orientation packet. Mentioning that your school district participates in a professional development program that is a pathway to a degree may attract more diversified applicants to your district.

Things to consider when recruiting new/potential employees to participate in apprenticeship:

  • As with recruiting existing employees to apprenticeship, the opportunity to “Grow Your Own” starts when a school district offers a new/potential employee an affordable pathway to a degree through participating in the apprenticeship program.

  • Advertising apprenticeship as a benefit to the employee is an innovative approach to attracting and retaining new/potential employees to your district.

  • The employee must meet the minimum qualifications and be employed in the occupation for which they are an apprentice.

  • The employee must be willing and able to commit to attending college courses on their own time at the 50% reduced apprenticeship tuition rate.
